The Driehaus Museum Presents 'Unraveling the Mysteries of Harris Burdick,' 2/9

The Driehaus Museum Presents 'Unraveling the Mysteries of Harris Burdick,' 2/9

Can a picture truly paint a thousand words? Audience members during this family-friendly musical performance by the Metroplis Oboe Quartet can find out at the Driehaus Museum on February 9, 2013.

The quartet performs The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, a lively, adventurous musical score written by Chicago composer James Stephenson. The composition is based on the beautifully illustrated book of the same title by Chris Van Allsburg, who also authored and illustrated The Polar Express and Jumanji. During the performance, the Metropolis Oboe Quartet focuses on three selected images from The Mysteries of Harris Burdick: "Another Place, Another Time," "The Harp," and "Under the Rug," asking audience members of all ages to participate in unraveling the story behind each mysterious work of art.

"This concert, which is being performed in Chicago for the first time by the talented musicians of the Metropolis Oboe Quartet, makes a delightful connection between art, storytelling, and music," says Driehaus Museum Director Lise Dubé-Scherr. "The audience will also be encouraged to make their own connections with what they see in Chris Van Allsburg's wonderful illustrations. The Driehaus Museum is the perfect setting for this performance, because every object or surface tells a story, whether it's an intricate Tiffany Studios stained-glass lampshade or a piece of original furniture owned by the family who once lived in this historic mansion."

There are two opportunities to attend Unraveling the Mysteries of Harris Burdick on Saturday, February 9: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth (5-12 years). This one-hour program is best suited for children age five and older. Tickets include complimentary general admission to the Driehaus Museum. Guided tours are available for $5 per person at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., or immediately following each performance.
