The Brooklyn Museum Announces June 2 First Target Saturdays Activities

The Brooklyn Museum's June 2 Target First Saturdays celebrates the beginning of summer with a night of music, dancing, games, contests, and food at the Best of Brooklyn Block Party. The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday attracts thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. June highlights include: 

5-7 p.m. Music: Son de Madre blends Cuban music with jazz, funk, and Brazilian. Part of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concert Series.

5-8 p.m. Performance: Performers from the Museum's local community showcase various styles of music and dance throughout the Museum.

5-8 p.m. Action Station: Laura Nova and Theresa Loong, creators of the Museum at Eldridge Street's Feed Me a Story project, invite visitors to reflect on their lives through memories of food.

6 p.m. Film: Hands to the Sky (Angelo Boyke, 52 min., 2010). Brooklyn premiere of a dance documentary that explores and celebrates the world of summertime dance jams and outdoor house music parties. A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow. Free tickets available at the Visitor's Center at 5 p.m. 

6 p.m. Talk: Alexis Miesen and Jennie Dundas, the entrepreneurs behind Blue Marble Ice Cream, speak about Blue Marble Dreams, a nonprofit venture that has helped eleven Rwandan women open their country's first ice cream shop. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m. 

6 and 7 p.m. Gallery Tours: "Summer Fun." A playful look at works in the collection. 

6:30-8:30 p.m. Hands-on Art: Search the galleries for hot Brooklyn styles and create a fashionable wrap to wear to the dance party. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m. 

7-9 p.m.: Artists Talk: Raw/Cooked artist Heather Hart discusses her instillation The Eastern Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off the Mother as visitors participate in activities related to tradition and transformation, from tarot readings to makeovers. Free timed tickets available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

8-10 p.m. Music: Society HAEpresents "Beats, Blocks & Brooklyn" featuring DJ crew The Ahficionados with Jasmine Solano, spinning music from Biggie to the Beastie Boys. 

8- 10 p.m. Participatory Program: Pose for street style-inspired portraits by photographers Amanda Adams-Louis, Delphine Fawundu, and Laylah Amatullah Barrayn. Visitors are also encouraged to post their own images, tagged #BrooklynMuseum and #BeatsBlocksBrooklyn. 

9 p.m. Book Club: Suleiman Osman discusses his book The Invention oF Brownstone Brooklyn: Gentrification and the Search for Authenticity in Postwar New York. 

9-10 p.m. Performance: Zongo Junction blends West African rhythms with funk, jazz and soul. 

10-11 p.m. Late Night in the Galleries: All galleries open. Explore the Museum.
