N-Y Historical Society Announces December 2012 Programs

N-Y Historical Society has announced the following upcoming events:

December Family Programs:

AT THE KIDS’ TABLE: CORNELIA VAN VARICK’S HOLIDAY KITCHEN
Saturday December 1, 2012 2:00 pm -- 4:00 pm

Ages 8 and up

RSVP required, $10 materials fee

Dutch families in New Amsterdam were known for all the delicious food they made at the holidays -- can you imagine all the good smells that would have come out of the kitchen? In this family activity, we'll explore the 17th century kitchen of Cornelia van Varick as she prepares traditional food for the holidays. We'll use sugar nippers and grind spices by hand, as well as lift a huge dutch oven. Then, we'll cook together, and you'll get to make two Dutch treats for the New Year: orange caraway cookies and fried doughnuts. contact familyprograms@nyhistory.org to reserve your spots.

Read The King of Mulbery Street and then join author Donna Jo Napoli and other families at the Book Wrap event to discuss the book, ask the author questions, and see related objects from the New-York Historical Society’s collection.

About Reading into History Book Club:

Each month families read a historical fiction book and participate in on-line discussions with authors, educators, and other families. Get ideas for discussion, ask authors questions, and respond to other book club members’ posts! At the end of each month families can attend a Book Wrap event, where they will share reactions to the book, see cool museum objects and documents related to the story, and meet other historical fiction fans!

About The King of Mulberry Street

Dom is nine years old and does not speak a word of English. After his mother puts him on a ship bound for New York City, he realizes he has to learn fast in order to survive life on the streets. He has no money or food; his one possession is a brand new pair of shoes. Follow Dom through Manhattan's Five Points, once the most dangerous neighborhood in New York, as he makes friends, makes trouble, and then learns to makes ends meet.

Look, imagine, draw and create—in Spanish! Spanish-speaking families explore history through art making in this educator-lEd Gallery and studio program. Educator Rosa Tejada leads a new program each month that invites families to participate in an enriching, hands-on learning experience and leads children and adults through conversations in the galleries and art making in the studio.

ALL ABOARD: HISTORIC TRAINS AND TOYS WEEKEND

Saturday December 15 and Sunday December 16, 2012 1 – 3pm

Free with Museum admission, ages 4 and up

After visiting the Holiday Express exhibition of historic trains and toys, families will create train-inspired art, hear tales of the rails, and learn about the history of trains and train collecting.

CROSS-STITCH CIRCLE

DiMenna Children’s History Museum

Free with Museum Admission, for ages 3 – 5

Each class will include story readings, time with historic toys, free exploration, a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, and time in DCHM OR a craft project. The time in DCHM/craft project will alternate each week.

Holiday Express: Can You Spot It?

November 23, 2012 – January 6, 2013

Spot the intricate details in these amazing model train scenes, composed of miniature trains, stations, people, and decorations made by the Märklin model train company. Can you spot the refreshment stand? The station clock? How many train cars are pulling into the train station? Bring the whole family, pick up your hunt, and see who can spot the most!
