Museum of the City of New York Launches Call for Submissions of Photographs Portraying Sandy's Impact

Museum of the City of New York Launches Call for Submissions of Photographs Portraying Sandy's Impact

As New York City still recovers from Superstorm Sandy, the Museum of the City of New York announced plans to showcase iconic images of the storm - from the region's preparations to acts of heroism to and resiliency and rebuilding of communities in the greater New York City metropolitan area.

The Museum of the City of New York's Call for Submissions invites both novice and professional photographers to submit images depicting the stages of preparation, destruction and rebuilding for a juried exhibition that will open in April, to coincide with the six-month anniversary of the storm. Consideration will particularly be paid to before and after images of the same subject, highlighting the dramatic effect of the storm.

"Superstorm Sandy touched so many of our lives, and over the last three months we have seen pain, we have seen devastation, and we have seen progress," said Susan Henshaw Jones, Ronay Menschel Director of the Museum of the City of New York. "The Museum's mission is to connect the past, present and future of this great city, and nothing has changed the conversation about city's - and region's - future more than this storm. So is important to bring together compelling images that not only document its history but that demonstrate how we responded and rebuilt so we, as a city, can learn and grow."

The exhibition will mark the Museum's latest foray into collecting and recognizing the photographic works of people from all walks of life as they capture pivotal moments in the city's history. The Museum of the City of New York recently presented "City Scenes: Highlights of New York Street Photography," along with the exhibition "London Street Photography." The South Street Seaport Museum, which is operated by the Museum of the City of New York, recently unveiled "Street Shots/NYC," an exhibition of street photography in the region since 2000. And, in January 2012, the Seaport Museum mounted an "Occupy Wall Street" photography exhibition that began with a similar public Call for Submissions.

The new Superstorm Sandy exhibition will be curated by Sean Corcoran, the Curator of Prints and Photographs for the Museum of the City of New York and the South Street Seaport Museum.

Both professional and amateur photographers are invited to submit pictures for consideration. Selections will be made by a jury comprised of photography curators and journalists.

Deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m., March 3, 2013. For more information detailing submission requirements, please visit: http://www.mcny.org/sidebars/sandy-photography-submissions.html
