MoMA-Announces-Their-Upcoming-Film-Screenings-20010101

MoMA announced their upcoming film schedule for January.

Raj Kapoor and the Golden Age of Indian Cinema
January 6–16
Largely unknown in North America—except, of course, to millions of fans of South Asian descent—actor, director, and mogul Raj Kapoor (1924–1988) is revered not only in India but throughout the former Soviet world, the Middle East, and beyond for the films he made during the Golden Age of Indian cinema. This exhibition of eight legendary Kapoor films, presented in newly struck 35mm prints, offers an introduction to one of the most ravishing and influential periods of world cinema.

Global Lens, 2012
January 12–28
The films presented in this annual collaboration between MoMA and the Global Film Initiative (GFI) are part of the touring film exhibition Global Lens, a project conceived to encourage filmmaking in countries with emerging film communities. The selection of 10 programs represents a concise survey of contemporary filmmaking from areas where local economic realities make such expensive and technology-driven endeavors a challenge. The series opens with the U.S. premiere of Turkish filmmaker Tolga Karaçelik's Toll Booth, introduced by the director.

The Contenders 2011
Through January 30
For this recurring series, the Department of Film combs through major studio releases and the top film festivals in the world, selecting influential, innovative films made in the past 12 months that we believe will stand the test of time. Upcoming screenings include Aki Kaurismäki's Le Havre and Werner Herzog's Into the Abyss.

Modern Mondays
Ongoing
MoMA's ongoing showcase for innovation on screen, Modern Mondays allows contemporary filmmakers and moving image artists to present their work directly to audiences. On January 9, MoMA presents Pedro Carvajal's 2005 documentary feature Propaganda: The Art and Crimes of Ron English, and a sampling of English's recent moving image works. After the screening, English engages in a discussion with Paper magazine editor Carlo McCormick.

An Auteurist History of Film
Ongoing
This ongoing screening cycle explores the evolution of film as a medium by charting the careers of several key directorial figures—not in order to establish a formal canon, but to develop one picture of cinematic history. Upcoming screenings include Joseph L. Mankiewicz's All About Eve (1950) and a program of films by Roberto Rossellini.

Escalator Repairs
Please note that the Museum is replacing all four escalators that service the Roy and Niuta Titus theaters. We anticipate that this work will be completed by mid-March 2012. The Museum's film program will continue to be held in the Titus 1 and 2 theaters and in The Celeste Bartos Theater during this time, and we ask for your patience during construction. Please remember to arrive early for all film screenings and to follow the directions of MoMA's Visitor Services and Security staff to ensure a smooth filmgoing experience.
