London Artist to Exhibit Americana Fascination in 'Homecoming'

London Artist to Exhibit Americana Fascination in 'Homecoming'

London artist to exhibit Americana fascination in 'Homecoming'

Marfa Contemporary will celebrate the opening of its next exhibition, "Homecoming," from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 100 East San Antonio St.

In "Homecoming," London-based artist Boo Ritson expresses her life-long fascination with American culture, stereotypes and landscapes.

Ritson lives and works in Chesham, England, and exhibits regularly at Poppy Sebire gallery in London. She earned a bachelor's degree in fine art at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College and a master's degree in sculpture at London's Royal College of Art.

The exhibition includes works that merge painting, sculpture, performance and photography. She paints her subjects in thick emulsion paint and has the scene photographed while the paint is still wet.

"The hyper-real, high-key cast of American stereotypes are drawn from imagined narratives and American iconography," Ritson said. "The fictional timeless American landscape is collaged together from elements found closer to home, in Chesham, England or Cornwall. It's a very English-centric view of utopia that takes the language from the wide-open spaces that we associate with America."

The reception is free and open to the public. The event is come-and-go. No RSVP is required. Dress is casual. For more information, please call 432.729.3500 or visit http://www.marfacontemporary.org

"Homecoming" will run through May 3 at Marfa Contemporary.
