J. Todd Galleries Celebrates 30 Years in Wellesley

J. Todd Galleries Celebrates 30 Years in Wellesley

In 1982, when Phyllis and Robert Totaro opened their art gallery for the first time on August 2nd, they showcased 43 pieces of art in their brand new 1,000 sq. ft. showroom in Wellesley, MA. Today, the gallery occupies some 3,000 sq. ft. and boasts an inventory of about 3,000 original works of fine art. And while galleries all around them have down-sized or closed their doors, J. Todd Galleries has continually grown its offerings and inventory and is now known as a regional leader among New England art galleries.

"Our growth has not been accidental," says Robert. For all of the 30 years, both owners have personally staffed the place, constantly looking for new ways to reach art collectors. "We've done everything from one-person shows to trunk shows to seminars to museum collaborative events," says Totaro. And their line of services has been expanded to include museum quality custom framing, art restoration (http://www.jtodd.com/services.asp?service=9), art appraisal and corporate art consulting. Today, it is a full-service fine art business, where the gallery showroom is just the tip of the iceberg. In its first year, the gallery serviced a ten-mile radius. Now, it does business nationally and internationally, and many collectors drive 100 miles to get there in person. International shipping services are also provided.

The website (www.jtodd.com) has also given the gallery worldwide reach. By surfing its 3rd generation site, a user can now see and get details on over 1,200 images (http://www.jtodd.com/products.asp) online. The gallery also does twice-monthly email blasts and makes itself accessible through social media.

The word "retirement" is not in the Totaros' vocabulary, it seems. "We work just as hard, but a lot smarter than we used to," says Totaro. He describes a small business owner's dream situation. "We make a good living doing what we love, and with every sale we create a happy collector and a happy artist along the way. It's a win-win-win."

The Totaros, now in their 60's, see no end in sight, citing that they have much more fun than their retired friends. "Keeping up with the latest art, decorating and technology trends and always discovering new, young talent, keeps us energized and current," they say.
Visit the gallery at 572 Washington St. in Wellesley, MA or on their website at www.jtodd.com. Call toll-free at 888-565-6554 for details.
